When you think of KAMAT you think of food- delicious and rich South Indian Vegetarian food. Kamat Hotels and Restaurants have been the pioneers at offering quality food and services to its customers.
To take you back in time when it all started…………
Kamat Hotel was first started by Late Shri Rangappa Panduranga Kamat in 1948.
The group has offered time-tested service for over 5 decades.
Sri Rangappa Panduranga Kamat was born in Bengre a village near Murdeshwar
He was son of agriculturist, who then moved to Hubli in search of better livelihood to support a big family with poor financial conditions. At the tender age of 9, Sri Rangappa moved to Hubli to work under his own older brothers Sri Subbraya and Sri Nagappa who were already working in a coffee shop in Hubli. In 1931, his brothers bagged a contract to run the Hubli Railway Canteen. In 1936, Sri Subbraya started his own restaurant, then
Called Brahman Coffee Club which was later named as Chaya Restaurant.
Sri Rangappa learnt the tricks of the trade from his brothers by working in their restaurants. He laid his hands on everything, right from cooking, cleaning, attending customers to purchasing, billing etc,--- all the important areas and practical aspects of Hotel Management.
In 1938, his brother and he started another restaurant called 'Vasant Bhavan'.
In 1942
Sri Rangappa became the sole owner of 'Vasant Bhavan'. That was his first restaurant.
In 1948 Sri Rangappa, exactly after 10 years of vasant Bhavan, with an investment of Rs 8000 started "Kamat Restaurant" at Broadway Hubli. At that point in time he wanted to differentiate his services, and offer the best to his customers, offered a variety of sumptuous quality food items, the latest furniture, crockery and equipment. He was also the first to start ice creams in his restaurants.
Thus Kamat Empire was born and from then on there was no stopping……….
He then expanded his operations to different cities--- 1958 in Gadag, 1963 in Davangere,
1965 in Bangalore, 1966 in Madgoan, 1968 in Honnavar, 1969 in Hyderabad, 1975 in Gulbarga, 1979 in Dharwad and so on and so forth.
His philosophy was to provide the customers with quality food, which is hygienic and wholesome, so that the customers get their value for money.
Kamat restaurants and hotels are now spread over 4 states namely , Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Goa.
The R.P Kamat group as you see it today…… is a large empire of Restaurants, Hotels,
